Canada depends on the work of medical practitioners employed in many different areas of the profession and as such, is always recruiting immigrants who have these skills.

The need for health care workers is growing as the number of patients increase and health care workers retire. For example, the Province of British Columbia has announced that it will need around 25 000 (twenty five thousand) nurses by the year 2022.

Hospitals in British Columbia are reported to be in “crisis mode”, because half of its nurses are between the age of 45 and 64 years. It is predicted that by 2036, 1 in 4 Canadians will be above 65 years old which will create more job opportunities in health and medical fields for young immigrant nurses.

Registered nurses may work in a wide range of capacities, all of which are needed in Canada. These include:

  • Nurse practitioners
  • Nurse researchers
  • Specialized nurses (burn patient, dialysis, cardiology)
  • Nurse instructors
  • Psychiatric nurses

A Registered Nurse is paid an average of CAD$31.83 per hour.

Dentists, Physicians and Veterinarians in Canada.

Employment growth will be higher for physicians, dentists and veterinarians between 2008-2019, more than any other occupation. The retirement rate in this occupational group will also be high, given that these workers tend to be older than average.

There will be a total of 62, 569 job openings for physicians, dentists and veterinarians over the period of 2008-2018. The Government of Canada expects that 43, 421 job seekers will be available to fill these job openings.

Job openings will result from both employment growth and retirements. In fact, because the Canadian population is aging, the demand for health services will greatly increase and the need for health care professionals will therefore rise.

There are many ways to work in Canada as a medical practitioner. The two most common ways are through the Federal Skilled Worker Program and Permanent Residents.
