Academic Term

Most colleges and universities run from early September until the end of April or early May. Regularly, this winter season is parted into two terms running September to December and January to April. Different types of summer studies may be offered May to August. A few institutions, for example, the University of Waterloo and Simon Fraser University, run a full tri-semester system, offering full courses during summer.

The Basics

Once you’ve settled and unpacked your bags, we suggest exploring your new surroundings. Take a walk around your student accommodation and why not give your loved ones back home a call? To call from Canada, your dialing will read as 011 + Country Code + Area Code + Local Number. We suggest getting an international calling card as they offer reduced rates and can be purchased at almost any convenience store.

Now let’s get back to the reason you’re here, your studies. Orientation is the first important part of your initial few days. Locate the International Students office at your college/university and a specialist will be able to deal with your enrollment before showing you around the campus. This is your opportunity to ask whatever questions you may have about the campus and other things you need to know.

Before term starts, ensure you’ve made the necessary arrangements to get your student card. This will give you access to all that you require including your apartment, library, and cafeteria.

Join in on the fun campus activities

As you start meeting new people and making friends, be sure to approach the situation with a very open mind, you’re going to experience many different cultures. Usually during or after orientation, your university will arrange a party or social event where you can get to meet your fellow classmates. If you’d like a more lasting experience, join clubs, societies or sporting groups. Sports or any form of physical activity is usually the best way to grow lasting friendships.
