Mercan-Capital

Located in Montreal, Mercan Capital is a recruitment and consulting agency that deals with immigration to Canada. With 25 years of ‘proven expertise and success,’ Mercan Capital was initially founded by Jerome Morgan in 1989 and promises to provide the helpful service of assisting internationals to immigrate to Canada. “Integrity, honesty and efficiency” is the motto of Mercan Capital, let’s see if they are true on their pledge.

Even though Mercan Capital’s main office is in Montreal, they have offices located on every continent – Canada, Asia, Middle-East, Europe, Africa and USA, taking pride in their international acclaim and expanding partnerships.

Digging a little deeper into who they are, we found littlejerry-photo information other than the brief piece on Jerome (aka Jerry) Morgan showing how Mercan Capital has grown since its inception. In their ‘Professional Team’ page, they claim to have licensed consultants, lawyers, accountants and experienced processing staff but they do not introduce us to any of these individuals. We are also told that these agents are proficient in English, French, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese and other native tongues to cater for their global clientele. But who are these people and are they qualified?

Jerome Morgan is found on the ICCRC database, under the registration number R415983 but there are no seals displayed anywhere on the Mercan Capital site.

The website

The website is user-friendly and provides general information about immigration and visa processing. All but the two most important pages – Terms & Conditions and a Privacy Policy are covered on this site. To our disappointment, the site lacks important information about how they conduct their business, their agents and lawyers, evidence of their legitimacy and more on how they will be recruiting individuals. Under their ‘Corporate Memberships’ section, we had difficulty linking to the sites they have listed. The site is presented in two languages, English and Japanese, so we assume that their target market is Asia.

Social Media

Mercan Capital seems to have a strong online presence. With three different accounts for Facebook and Twitter each – one dedicated to their Indian clients and another which links to another Mercan Group site (http://investorimmigrationvisa.com ) that displays information about a coalition with what seems to be a US EB-5 visa investment program. The main social media pages are saturated with relevant content about their services and other updates on Canadian news. The other sites are less liked and also less updated in contrast to the main site.

About the Second site

According to the ‘About us’ page on the EB-5 Mercan Group PrograCapture 2m, “The EB-5 visa category is currently the fastest way for high net worth individuals to obtain Green Card for their family. It was created to stimulate the U.S. economy through job creation and capital investment by foreign investors. Foreign investors only need to invest as little as $500,000 in an eligible business that will create 10 jobs.

This is not true. According to Federal US law, in order to be eligible for this specific program, the immigrant needs to invest a minimum of $1 million USD (not $500,000 as Mercan Group state). EB-5 Mercan Group is however more established with a clear introduction to each of their partners as opposed to Mercan Capital’s site.

Complaints

Even though their motto boasts integrity, their online reputationcomplaints sings a different song. According to two different news reports cited above, we can clearly see how Mercan Capital does not deliver on that promise. When these allegations were made known to Morgan, he acknowledged to CBC News that some of the contracts’ terms are considered illegal under employment legislation and said that the company no longer uses those methods.

Conclusion

After extensive research on this Immigration agency, we have concluded that Mercan Capital checks out to be legitimate. That does not mean that we do not have concerns though, such as the obvious lack of terms & conditions and a privacy policy and the lack of real company identity on what is supposed to be the main site. We also have questions about the investing coalition they seem not to have mentioned on their main site.
